I never thought I’d find solace on the inside of Lady Ga Ga’s arm.
But there you go. She got this tatt done at some late-night Japanese ink parlour…quoting her favourite philosopher Rainer Maria Rilke:
In the deepest hour of the night, confess to yourself that you would die if you were forbidden to write. And look deep into your heart where it spreads its roots, the answer, and ask yourself, must I write?
I like it. But me, I’d probably gone with one of Rilke’s other quotes, like this:
I hold this to be the highest task for a bond between two people: that each protects the solitude of the other.
or this:
Let life happen to you. Believe me: life is in the right, always.
Or this one, which encapsulates the sense of chaos that life presents when you allow yourself to bob freely on the wave:
Everything is blooming most recklessly; if it were voices instead of colors, there would be an unbelievable shrieking into the heart of the night.
Or definitely this one:
Once the realization is accepted that even between the closest human beings infinite distances continue, a wonderful living side by side can grow, if they succeed in loving the distance between them which makes it possible for each to see the other whole against the sky.
It kind of sums up my beliefs about relationships…it’s best to travel side by side. It’s the distance, the contrast, the frisson (yes!) between us and a loved one that provides the launch pad for growth. As we travel along we look across and see our best mate and they provide a mirror for our progress. Because the people we choose to love are always a reflection of our own strengths and weaknesses.
